Being a citizen basically means that one is a member of a particular country (in my case, Bangladesh) and has the rights because the person is either born there or is given the rights (from the government because of the parents). Citizenship is, in my opinion, a rope that binds a group of people together; that means that the group is connected and in agreement when it comes to values, equality, and religion. It is not about what color the person as many people seem to ponder nowadays. Every citizen has rights; although in many Middle Eastern countries, governments don't give the people that freedom. In the US, for instance, citizens have the right to express themselves how ever they want. They can also worship whatever they wish to and vote. The privilege of being a citizen includes the fact that an individual won't live in fear of deportation nor will he be denied housing. No one will be able to exploit the person because they are under the protection of that country. These people, are legal immigrants. They bring something into the country. The refugees, on the other hand, are not citizens because they don't contribute to the country's economic prosperity. The government that keeps them seem to do more for them than they do for both themselves and the country they live in. Even though they aren't citizens of a country, they do get aid because it's humanity. However, that doesn't in any case make them citizens. These are few of the many privileges one has when they're a citizen of a country (not all countries). The duties of a citizen is rather simple. The government expects, in exchange of protection and freedom that they're providing, the citizens to pay taxes, obey the laws, and serve as a witness (in necessary). These are few of the duties a citizen should comply.
